Fall Scented Essential Oils

by Tyler Barnes

As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures begin to drop I find myself thinking about fall and the scents that come with it.  While in the summer I want light, clean smells, in the fall I want more warming, spicy scents.  Scents like cinnamon and clove remind me of the fall and so for this post I am going to focus on the “fall” scented essential oils and some of their benefits and uses.   Cinnamon Bark: This essential oil is used to strengthen the heart and nervous system and assist with circulation. It is anti-infectious and anti-parasitic.  You can use it against colds, flu, or a cough and it has been known to promote physical energy.  Be careful with this oil since it is a “hot” oil and will need to be diluted with a carrier oil. Clove Bud: Clove Bud essential oil can help with the…

Make your Guest’s Stay Better with Essential Oils

by Tyler Barnes

If you have friends or family that live out of state or out of the country you may need to set up a guest room for their stay. If you live in a resort area, you will certainly have frequent guests staying at your home. If your guest is a good friend or a mother-in-law, there are a few easy ways to make their stay more enjoyable and memorable using essential oils.   A bath basket is a great way to place towels, soap, cotton balls and other toiletry items in a reserved guest bathroom. If you don’t have a guest bathroom, place the basket at the foot of the bed. Essential oils work with this basket well. Simply mix a very diluted mixture of a soft essential oil blend such as the tranquility blend or the pure and clean blend into a spray bottle. Spray the blend onto guest…

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

by Tyler Barnes

There are two different types of Chamomile essential oils, German and Roman.  Since our essential oil is Roman Chamomile I will focus on this variety of oil.  Chamomile is a well known herb used for relaxation, I love to have Chamomile tea before bed to ease my anxiety and calm my mind.  Roman Chamomile essential oil is great for making a tea out of, just add some honey and few drops of the oil and drink up.  Roman Chamomile is known for helping with acne, dry itchy skin, eczema, psoriasis, and easing skin puffiness.  You can also use it for boils, burns, allergies, or asthma.  When applied to muscles it can ease muscle pain, help with sprains and inflamed joints, and is great for the digestive system. Besides making your bed time tea here are some other uses for Roman Chamomile Essential Oil: Add 10 drops to milk and mix…

Sleep Better with the Help of Essential Oils

by Tyler Barnes

We live in a go, go, go world. This is a large problem as it has created a huge society with people suffering from insomnia. Without the right amount of sleep and relaxation in our lives we are prone to health issues.   Getting the proper amount of sleep each night is necessary to maintaining a balanced body, but what do you do if you just can’t seem to relax enough to sleep well? When a glass of warm milk and a hot bubble bath just don’t cut it, some people take sleeping pills, while others opt for a large glass of wine before bed. Sleeping pills or alcohol may work temporarily for some people but they can create addictions and additional health issues. This is where essential oils come in and can help save the day (or the night when you really need the sleep).   Lavender oil is…

Create a Spa Pedicure at Home

by Tyler Barnes

There is nothing quite like a relaxing spa pedicure to make you feel rejuvenated and to leave your feet looking beautiful. But, these pedicures can come at a hefty price, especially when you love them as much as I do! You can easily recreate the same amazing spa atmosphere and elegant toes at home.   First you need to create the right type of spa-like environment. You can do this in any bathroom with an essential oil diffuser and unscented candles. Use the candles to create a gentle light glow and add an essential oil to the diffuser that will help to enhance the mood such as lavender oil. You can also use a music device to play a serenity mix just like you would hear over the speakers at a five star spa.   Now that you have created a mood with candles, an essential oil diffuser and…

Reflexology with Essential Oils

by Tyler Barnes

Do you ever wonder if you’re getting the most out of your essential oils?  There are so many ways to use them, and so many oils to choose from that it can feel a little overwhelming.  One of the simplest and most effective uses I have found for essential oils is using them in combination with reflexology.  Reflexology is a healing method that uses pressure and massage on reflex points in the feet and hands to treat the whole body.  Using essential oils during this process can assist the healing and help remove blocks that may be causing discomfort.  Reflexology is more than just massaging your feet and hands, but there are charts that can show you which parts of the hands and feet represent the different parts of the body, so you can use a reflex point to treat pain, discomfort, or other types of ailments on any part…

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

by Tyler Barnes

Eucalyptus essential oil is one that many people are familiar with.  The scent is widely used for congestion and I have been in saunas where they use eucalyptus oil to enhance the steam rooms.  While I was aware of the benefits for respiratory problems I was unaware of everything else this essential oil can assist with.  Due to eucalyptus oil’s antiseptic properties it can be used for athlete’s foot, dandruff, sore throats, and bug bites.  It is also useful in reducing fevers and blood pressure, helping with muscle and joint pain, headaches and migraines, and even helps with arthritis.  This is another essential oil that is great to have on hand but one that needs special care.  It can be considered a “hot oil” because it may cause irritation for some people so make sure to test it on a small area of the body before applying it to a…

Aromatherapy as an Afternoon Mood Enhancer

by Tyler Barnes

We all have experienced those afternoons in the middle of the workday when we slump a bit over our desks and our minds just want to drift. For many of us this is the time of the day that we turn to sugary or high carbohydrate snacks or caffeine to get back on track. But, there is a much healthier way to enhance our mood and help to keep us focused by using aromatherapy. Aromatherapy, when used with high quality essential oils, is extremely powerful and effective as a mood enhancer. Aromatherapy diffusers can be used to allow an oil to softly scent and enhance an area. Plug-in aromatherapy diffusers work wonders in an office or cubicle area. They work quickly when they are turned on to place oil into the air and to alleviate common mid-day drowsiness. All essential oils boast their own unique strengths and mood influencing authorities….

Essential Oils and Cold Compresses

by Tyler Barnes

In our last post I introduced the ideas of compresses and essential oils and talked about hot compresses.  Cold compresses are another great tool for treating injuries.  Cold compresses are used for recent injuries like sprains, bruising, swelling or inflammation, fevers, and headaches.  When you receive a serious injury the RICE method is usually the best way to reduce swelling: Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevation.  When you add essential oils to that compress healing times are often reduced. Making a cold compress is very similar to the hot compress: 1.       Add 3-4 drops of essential oil to your ice-cold water (for a fever use lukewarm), depending on the size of injury your compress size will vary but you need enough water to soak your compress usually a few cups. 2.       Take a clean cloth, like a small hand towel or something to just cover the injury, and soak it in…
